Breaking the Silence – Men’s Mental Health at Brisbane GP

For generations, men have been told to be strong, stoic, and silent about their struggles. Phrases like “man up” or “boys don’t cry” have discouraged men from showing vulnerability, even when facing overwhelming challenges. At Brisbane GP, we believe it’s time for that to change.

Men’s mental health matters — and this Men’s Mental Health Month, we’re putting it in the spotlight.

You don’t have to wait until you’re unwell to see your GP. Whether it’s a full check-up, a conversation about your mental health, or just making sure everything’s on track, we’re here to help you feel your best.

The Silent Struggle

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Men are significantly less likely to seek help for mental health issues than women, yet they are three to four times more likely to die by suicide in Australia. Depression, anxiety, and substance misuse affect millions of men, but many continue to suffer in silence — often fearing judgement, misunderstanding, or being seen as weak.

Bottling up emotions doesn’t make them disappear; it makes them heavier. Without support, these challenges can become unmanageable.

Why Men Don’t Speak Up

Common reasons men avoid reaching out for help include:

  • Stigma – The lingering belief that emotional openness is weakness

  • Social conditioning – Boys are often taught from a young age to suppress feelings

  • Fear of burdening others – Worrying they’ll inconvenience or worry loved ones

  • Lack of awareness – Not recognising symptoms of depression or anxiety

Changing the Conversation

We can all play a part in breaking the stigma around men’s mental health:

  • Encourage open conversations – A genuine “How are you really doing?” can be powerful

  • Listen without judgement – Sometimes the best support is simply being present

  • Normalise seeking help – Reassure men that seeing a GP, psychologist, or counsellor is a sign of strength

  • Lead by example – Sharing your own story can help others feel less alone

At Brisbane GP, we provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental environment for these conversations. Our GPs, along with our in-house psychologist, are here to listen and guide you towards the right support.

Support is Available

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You don’t have to walk this path alone.

  • Lifeline – 13 11 14 (24/7 crisis support)

  • MensLine Australia – 1300 78 99 78 (support for men, relationships, and family)

  • Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 or beyondblue.org.au

  • Head to Healthheadtohealth.gov.au (gateway to digital mental health resources)

This Men’s Mental Health Month, let’s challenge outdated ideas of masculinity. Real strength is not silence, it’s showing up, speaking honestly, and asking for help when needed.

Brisbane GP is here to support men’s health in Brisbane with compassionate care, practical strategies, and access to the right services. Men, your mental health matters. You are not alone. And it’s always okay to talk about it.
